The Renault Trafic van picks up two awards at the MPG Marathon

The Trafic Van has picked up two titles at this year’s ALD Automotive/Shell FuelSave MPG Marathon.
The multi-award-winning van won “overall best percentage improvement” with a 54.73% better return than its official fuel consumption figure. Additionally, the Renault Trafic’s performance of 59.11mpg over the pre-determined 370-mile route also won Renault the title for “class 8 best mpg”.
The fuel-sipping two-litre Renault Trafic LL29 dCi 115 was driven by Martin Carter and Alison Miller from Babcock Group who were loaned the Trafic by Renault UK. No fewer than 11 vans entered the hard-fought light commercial vehicle section, with second place in this category also scooped by an identical Renault Trafic thanks to fleet safety managers, Les Stiff and Ian Marginson, who managed a 53.65% uplift over the published mpg.
This is the 11th time the competition has taken place and is organised by Fleet World magazine to demonstrate that the use of smarter driving techniques can save a considerable amount of money at the fuel pumps.
MPG Marathon organiser, Ross Durkin, said, “This is the Trafic’s second win in two years and its margin of victory underscores not only the skill of the drivers, but also the frugal nature of Renault’s 2.0-litre dCi engine.
“The van section of this year’s MPG Marathon was extremely competitive and for Renault it was a doubly sweet moment when the second Trafic taking part in the event came second by the slimmest of margins. The important message that fleet managers should take from the event is that with fuel prices as high as they are, they should always be ready to challenge their drivers’ fuel consumption figures.”
